"Perspectives in Fetal Medicine" is the start of a series of books which gives the reader a very broad understanding on how fetal medicine has evolved to become an important part of obstetrics. Each book will focus on pertinent topics in this area and aims to discuss practical issues currently facing the clinician. It is not only intended for specialists or sub-specialists in the subject but also for the general practitioner and anyone who is involved in the care of the fetus. It brings together newer technologies such as in ultrasound and discusses its current role in practice. |
Ever since the ultrasound scan has been introduced into obstetrics, our diagnostic skills in the detection of fetal disease have improved tremendously. This is made possible especially by the recent technological advances, giving us the ability to view the fetus with exquisite detail, even in the early embryo development. With this heightened ability to understand normal anatomy and function, our therapeutic options to treat fetus are also increasing. As the performance of ultrasound machines improves, our clinical experience accumulates. The applications in ultrasonography have therefore grown tremendously, making it difficult for the busy practitioner to catch. It is with this in mind that the first book in the series looks at the integral use of ultrasonography in the areas of amniocentesis, the first trimester and fetal echocardiography. |
The format is in the form of lecture notes and many explanatory ultrasound images to accompany the text, for easy reference and understanding. It has been compiled from a series of lectures given by well known teachers and experts in the field of sonography and fetal medicine. One of the main objectives is to be as practical as possible so that the practising physician may refer to it in their own consulting room. It is not only meant for the specialist but also for those whose passion is to improve their skills in the use of ultrasound for the diagnosis and treatment of their patients. |
